Box Joints

I don’t make box joints very often, but they do come in handy on occasion. Relatively easy to make, lots of glue surface area, and about as strong as a dovetail, it is a useful joint. I have used them mostly for small wall-hanging cabinets. My guess is they are mostly used for drawers, but my choice for that purpose is either dovetails (for special projects) or rabbet/dado joints (for utilitarian use), both of which have mechanical strength in one direction.

Because I don’t use the joint often, I don’t want a jig that is complicated or takes up a lot of space. My jig is one piece of wood with the obligatory finger protruding from one side. Another piece, permanently attached to the fence of my sled, completes the jig (and can be used for other jigs). It’s simple and, once set up, needs little to no adjustment.

    Carl,
Loved the video. I have kept my box joint jig and it works like a charm.
Again, good to hear your voice.

Wish I’d have learned that from you before buying from Incra. It was 101 and I hadn’t qualified to be in your class yet, sooo …
    Love your tutorials Carl!
