Chair Horse Build Part 2

I build the base of the project next. I’ve built at least four of these in the past, two for me and at least two for the school, so I’ve got a good idea about where things can go wrong. I just have to remember what they are…

So far the build has gone smoothly. A little hiccup at the router table, but otherwise no issues.

One addition to the project that may be helpful for some is a better way to raise and lower the top. Many people struggle with raising it; it’s fairly heavy and can sometimes get stuck. A former student came up with a system to fix that:

It’s really clever and very easy to incorporate (thanks Tom!). You need an extra 1/2″ hole on each side, into which you install a nylon bushing. The rest is simple; install the 3/8″ rod with the round gears, install the handle, and install the rack gear. The parts were purchased from McMaster-Carr and in January 2024 the cost was about $170. Download the parts list below. I was told to ensure the handle is mounted so you can reach the knobs (not installed in the video). You will also want to cut the rod shorter.

That lever for raising and lowering the horse is awesome!!! I’ve always had trouble getting the horses to the proper height I need at school. This is a back saver!
