Update and Stanley Plane Identification

I’ve been Covid-free for a couple of weeks now. Thanks to those who wished me well via my last post.

Busy times! My shop has been quite the mess for a while as my wife and I have been doing some preliminary sorting and packing for an anticipated move out of California next year. That, plus various other home projects, trips, trip prep, etc. has made it difficult to get into the shop.

I’ve also been trying to figure out what to do with about 300 videos on the Cerritos College Woodworking YouTube channel, all but two of which are mine, and most of which are unlisted. Uploading them there seemed like the right thing to do at the time, but now that I have retired it no longer makes sense. Many are course-specific, and most are getting few, if any, views. Those that are public are getting views, but no one is really monitoring the channel, responding to the occasional comment, or uploading new videos.

Now that I’ve started my own channel (which never occurred to me prior to retirement), I’ve decided to delete most of them and upload many of those to my channel. I’ll re-edit some to tighten things up a bit and release them as they are completed. Many will not have an associated blog post here, so make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to be notified when they post. Most will be handtool related, but there will be others.

The first one up is Stanley Plane Identification (what to look for and what to avoid when buying vintage planes). Watch it here.

Hello Carl, it has been quite a while since we spoke. I have not been able to visit campus because I am now a mostly full time caregiver for my wife. She had a stroke in 2017. My neighbor dad passed a many months ago. He asked me if I could finish a morris chair for him. His dad had started it but never had chance to finish. For me to finish I need a copy of the plans. The chair will be for his mom. I have stayed busy in
My shop building cabinets and a fair amount of time working on my lathes. The more time I spend in shop the better I feel. I still bowl in a senior bowling league. I would enjoy getting together for a chat. Let me know back on plans. Thank you. Carl Jueschke

    Hi Carl,
I thought you were moving to Bend, OR! I hope you and your wife love Idaho. I love being retired and I bet you will too! Go hiking for me once in a while…

    • Good to hear from you, Laurie! You have a good memory! We ruled out Bend a while ago (along with several others). Couer d’Alene is #1 on the list now, but nothing is cast in stone, yet. So many variables…

Carl I would enjoying seeing your videos. I am taking my second class at Cerritos, although my friend, Rick Weiland has been my mentor since 2014 and we have built many things together. I retired last year and I am enjoying woodworking as a hobby.
    Don

    • I remember Rick well; very dedicated and asked good questions. Glad to hear you’re taking classes at Cerritos. I’m sure you will get a lot out of it; there’s nothing like personal feedback. And congrats on your retirement. I heartily recommend it!

  • Glad to hear you’re COVID free Carl. Did I miss you mentioning your intended destination once you escape the ever declining part of civilization we’ve called California for most of our lives? In my case “all of my life!”
Blessings to you and your wife when you make that final touchdown.
Now I remember you mentioning your new home during your cross country tour “blog”. I just can’t remember what it was. (Memory fading fast!)

    • Thanks Mike! We are heading to Coeur d’Alene Idaho. Haven’t decided on a specific area yet. We’ll probably rent for a bit before we buy to ensure we’ve made the right decision. I’ll keep you all posted.

Great idea Carl. Keep what you know is of value whether now or in the future. I know that there are many that I would like to “review” for time to time. I would hate to see those be unavailable. I have the notes but not the video, lol.
Hope you find/found a great please to rest your soul out of California perhaps?
Glad you are doing well and stay in touch.

I know its self serving or maybe serving of your former students but if you told me how to get access to some of them / all of them from classes I took from you, I would try to download and watch them repeatedly especially the SU ones. They were excellent and are great tutorials. Tony Bober

Glad you are feeling better. As I offered over the years, be glad to help in any way. I know the feeling of a messy shop. When and if you need, I’ll come help you pack and load your shop. Be well Carl.

    • Thanks Mark. I may take you up on the offer of help. It’s going to be a challenge…

  • glad you are feeling better, looking forward for those videos

    • Thanks Tony! I’m enjoying your Instagram posts; great to see what you’re up to.
