Tilt-up Shelf Build Part 2

Not much to say about the remainder of the build. I’m happy with how it came out, although the finish could be better. When I had my woodworking business, I used Sherwin-Williams stain products on occasion to color various projects. I still had one of their color charts, but upon arriving at the local S-W store I found they no longer make their own stains. They carry Minwax products now. The guy and gal working there were super helpful in finding a stain that matched pretty well.

I forgot, however, how difficult it is to stain plywood. It came out okay, but it’s a little blotchy; I should have used a pre-conditioner to help even things out. I topcoated it with several coats of satin polyurethane, which should provide reasonable protection.

I may add a top piece at some point to get the surface even with the counter top. It would have to be about 1-1/4″ thick and would stick out a bit when stowed. In the current configuration it stows within the overhang of the counter. We’ll see how it works out on our next trip, which starts in a few days.

Note that I won’t be posting until we return in about a month. See you then.

  • I like it, a very professional video. Especially, for those of us with a trailer and the same space issues. Thanks!
